His name is Jim Valvano.
He was the head coach of the men’s basketball team at North Carolina State University.
This picture is from the 1983 championship tournament when his NC State team won.
They were NOT expected to win.
Coach Valvano won an ESPY award (think, the Grammy’s for sports) in March of 1993.
Upon receiving his award, he gave one of the greatest acceptance speeches ever.
His words were heartfelt, sincere, and passionate.
He encouraged people to laugh, think, and be moved to tears (of joy and happiness).
He did this knowing that he did not have much more time to live.
He died of cancer just 8 weeks after he gave that speech.
Hopefully you aren’t facing a terminal illness and you have a long life ahead of you.
No matter how long you have, don’t give up.
“How do you go from where you are to where you want to be? …Have an enthusiasm for life. You have to have a dream, a goal. You have to be willing to work for it.” -Jimmy V
